Important Information - New Students arriving August 2018

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We look forward to welcoming new students to Southern Ontario Collegiate for the 2018/19 academic year. Below please find some information to help you prepare for registration.

Registration and Placement Tests

Registration for new students will take place on August 15, 16 and 17, 2018 (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday). New students should arrive at the school office with their passport, copies of transcripts and immunization records, as well as current contact information to complete the registration process.

Placement tests will take place on each of these days at:

- 10:00 - Math (and ESL, only for students whose first language is not English) and

- 12:30 - English literature

Placement tests for those students who arrive after August 17 will be scheduled around the same hours in the opening week of the semester. If you have questions, please contact us at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Travel Information for Students

It is very important that the school is provided with full travel details for students arriving in Canada, including name of airline, airport departure date and time, expected arrival date and time and the correct terminal at Toronto Pearson International airport. Also provide details of any stopovers. Please forward this to us at least one week in advance of the flight in order that we have sufficient time to arrange airport pick up and home stay.

In addition, please let us know of any delays or changes to flight schedules that may occur en route. Drivers will not be able to remain at the airport indefinitely; the more accurate information you can provide, the better are we able to support arriving students.

For those parents who will be accompanying theirs wards to Canada, please find below links to some of the hotels closest to the school. We recommend that you book early as the demand for hotels is pretty high at this time of the year.

There is always the option of Airbnb if you are going to be here for more than one week; it is probably more cost effective, and use of the kitchen is likely to be available if you are renting the whole apartment. The website is: https://www.airbnb.ca/s/Bay-St-N-Hamilton--Canada

Homestay/Residence

SOC provides students with exceptional living arrangements with local Canadian families who have been pre-inspected, screened and interviewed. The accommodations include bed, desk, chair and closet. Students find these accommodations to be a perfect environment to study comfortably and effectively. Internet source is provided by the homestay family for unlimited service up to 11:00PM (exceptions for assignments). In most cases, homestay families host 2 students (exceptions are possible).

At the residence, between 5 to 8 students of the same gender are placed in homes dedicated exclusively for students. There, they receive supervision, meals, cleaning service, privately appointed rooms, and common areas for meals and TV.

At SOC, our host family program provides students with a home away from home!

Conveniently located in Hamilton, Ontario, our students usually travel by bike, public transport or walk to school.

Our host families are dedicated to providing an authentic Canadian experience by including our students in their everyday lives. In addition to gaining a welcoming host family, our students will receive:
• A comfortable bedroom
• Home-cooked meals
• Holiday celebrations
• Parental guidance
• Immersion in an English-speaking home
• Cultural guidance

Not only will you feel safe and secure for your child, but these host families are great ambassadors for Canada. They can expose your child to the beauty of the Golden Horsehoe Region, including Niagara Falls, Toronto, Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, the Bruce Trail, and surrounding areas. Some of the highlights throughout the year include:
• Hiking along the Lake Ontario shoreline
• The Annual Burliington "Sound of Music" Festival
• A family trip to the beach
• A bike tour throughout Niagara On The Lake
• Hockey games and concerts
• Shopping at the malls and brand name outlet • Exploring the wonders of the Golden Horseshoe Region
• Being exposed to the beauty of Ontario's 4 seasons (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer)

As the majority of our host families live close to the school, students can easily commute to and from school by walking, riding a bicycle, or taking the public transit - Hamilton is an extremely safe community!

We strive to place our students in a positive and fulfilling home arrangement. Good communication between SOC, the host parents and our students' parents is important to the success of each student's stay. In the unlikelihood of an unsuitable match, we make every effort to locate a replacement.
